Pewsey Vale Vs Sutton Benger
29th September 2007
Sutton Benger entered their third league game of the season with Pewsey Vale without the imposing presence of club captain Christopher Theodore Roe and their only specialist fly-half Domenic Riccio.
With resources stretched in their absence, Sutton Benger made a positive start to the Dorset and Wilts 2 North game which was played in favourable rugby conditions. The Benger Pink had plenty of possession early on with quick ball being fed from an efficient Benger rucking display. For all their possession, Benger were unable to breach a determined Pewsey Vale defence.
A frustrated Sutton Benger team finally notched up the first points of the game when consistent infringements on the ground from the home team allowed stand in place kicker Chris Crome to get the scoreboard rolling. Three more points were to follow from the same boot in a try-less first half.
With tiring legs creating gaps in the second period, Matthew Eugene Johns was able to latch onto the ball in open play and using good football skills, was able to dribble the ball to the try line and produce Sutton Benger with their opening try.
Fly half Crome contributed with a try of his own before new recruit Stuart Reginald Hedges ended a sublime Sutton Benger phase of play, which saw the ball move through many Benger hands whilst progressing up the left flank.
With all tries converted, SB had earned a 27 point lead but Pewsey Vale finished the stronger taking advantage of a tired and disorganised Benger defence for their centre to run the ball home for the score to end 27-7.
