Malmesbury Vs Sutton Benger
10th November 2007
Sutton Benger remained within touching distance of the top of the Dorset and Wilts 2 North league table with a professional 78-0 demolition of neighbours Malmesbury.
With a team unified after a disappointing defeat to Colerne two weeks ago, Benger started brightly with the pack stamping their authority over their opposition eight. It was from a well drilled forward set-piece that fly half Crome was able to dissect the Malmesbury 10 and 12 to set the ball down between the uprights and get the scoreboard ticking.
Scrum half Denning doubled the visitors lead before a determined home side applied prolonged pressure in Sutton’s 22. Benger’s inability to abide to the rules resulted in Malmesbury’s first chance for points with a kick at goal. Malmesbury will feel extremely hard done by with what followed, as the kick sailed wide of the far upright to be collected and touched down by a Malmesbury hand. The referee saved Benger’s blushes though as he adjudged a Benger player to be first to the ball.
As Benger’s discipline improved so did their winning margin. Benger’s forwards showed they’re far from one-dimensional as they began to enjoy time with ball in hand running at their opposition. The relentless pressure told throughout the game as Sutton ran in 12 unanswered tries. Man-of-the-match Lance Berkley helped himself to his maiden score; with scrum half Tim Denning proving to be a real thorn in the side of the home team as he left his Sutton Benger hat-trick virginity in the Malmesbury grounds.
Further beneficiaries of a high scoring game were full-back Paul Boorman, wing Ollie Steen, centres Sam Maggs and Dave Burrows, second row Chad Parker, with maybe the pick of bunch being Jay Bamburys individual score from a standing start in his own half to power through the entire Malmesbury backline to power in under the posts. (Apologies, I’ve forgotten one person, make yourself known and I’ll include you!)
The boot of Crome (held together primarily by tape as he can’t afford new ones) failed on three conversion attempts to finish with a personal points tally of 23 for the game.
The Benger pants are now wet with anticipation as the New Year approaches with a string of home league games which will include a long overdue clash with Chippenham III.
