Benger start League Season with a win
Sutton Benger started the Dorset and Wilts North Division 2 season with a convincing 33-0 win at Melksham 2nds on Saturday.
The young Benger side who handed debuts to new players Olly Steen, Joe Haines, Dave Burrows and Sam Maggs ran in 5 unanswered tries on a hot afternoon at George Ward School.
The hosts started strongly and brought the game to Benger in the first 10mins but the Benger defence stayed strong through some big tackles from Mat Rae and John Coleman, and it was the away side who took the lead against the run of play midway through the first half with new captain Chris Roe picking up from the back of a ruck and powering his way through the Melksham defence to score under the posts.
Benger settled down after this and scored a further 2 tries before the interval through scrum half Tim Denning and Roe with his second of the afternoon. The Benger forwards were making good ground from each breakdown, in particular Matt Stacey and Luke Parker
Benger had most of the possession in the second half but credit must go to Melksham who restricted them to only two more tries, debutant Joe Haines scored from close range for the fourth and fly half Domenico Riccio completed the scoring in the final few minutes after Haines had brilliantly unloaded in the tackle. Riccio added 4 conversions.
Sutton Benger will look to welcome back Matt Johns, Adam Chamberlian, Chris Harrison and Chris Crome this weekend for their home game with Devizes 2nds. Kick off 3pm
