Corsham Vs Sutton Benger
3rd November 2007

The first team league aspirations were rekindled by victory over league leaders Corsham following a terrific effort from all the boys on the park on Saturday .
Right from arriving at the ground through the warm up and all the way to the final whistle there was an intensity  about the whole team. The match started with Benger on the front foot and early in proceedings  Crome chipped over the defence and Grayer was first to the ball but couldn’t find Dave Burrows with what could have been a try scoring pass. This was followed by a slick handling move leaving Grayer free on the outside for a good run. His chip over the full back had too much on it and the position was lost. Ten minutes in and the Corsham pack started to make consistent ground and with their scrum half looping  around the flyhalf gaps started to appear in the defensive line. Several times last ditch tackles saved the day notably from half backs Denning and  Crome and Sam Maggs in the centre. Several penalties were given away and from one fifteen metres out corsham had a chance to take the lead. The kick was , however , not much better than one of Pidge’s (where the f… is he ?) finest  and it remained scoreless. Twenty five minutes in and eventually the pressure told and Corsham drove a rolling maul off the back of a line out over the line which this time was converted. Benger came back strongly and after stealing an opposition line out on the twenty two the ball was shipped to Maggs who cut back inside on a switch and drove himself over the line. Conversion missed . Less than two minutes later once more from a lineout take the ball was passed out to fly half Crome who cut back inside in his opposite number and then arced outside the covering flanker and left the full back for dead to score a rather good try. Conversion made. Half time 12-7 to Benger.

Second half Corsham attacked pretty well throughout and a combination of  good tackling in defence together with the full gamut of  forward passes , wrong options and butterfingers kept the score down to a single penalty goal for Corsham. Several substitutions were made  by Benger  and with ten minutes to go the coach felt it was time to introduce himself  to help shore up a tiring scrum . It looked as though corsham must get the winning score but Alex Hyde stole a turnover offloaded to Crome who proceeded once more to shred the opposition defence from way inside his own half with another searing run to a touchdown ten metres to the right of the post. The kick was unfortunately missed and so the last few minutes were spent once more tackling , tackling and tackling again. The final whistle was greatly received by all the players with the final score seventeen to ten in the visitors favour.

A great result enjoyed by those watching who included , it was good to see, several of the second teamers and those who are currently crocked.
